Abstract

The presentation will focus on the spin off of the Hospital Products business (Hospira, Inc.) from Abbott Laboratories in 2004. The importance of creating a corporate Vision, Values, Strategy and 6 key principles for execution will be discussed together with the criticality of alignment between business strategy and R&D. By following this approach and implementing changes to increase cross functional collaboration, simplicity, flexibility and project governance, Hospira has been able to realize a 35%

improvement in R&D productivity without compromising product quality. The implications of these results will be discussed together with some of the initiatives Hospira is taking to drive growth in Asia and become more globally focused.


Biography

Jim Mitchell received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Iowa State University in 1979. During his 28-year industrial career, he has held various R&D and Operations positions in 6 different companies, including his current position as Vice President Pharmaceutical R&D at Hospira,Inc. Jim holds several patents in the areas of drug delivery and protein chemistry and has been directly involved with the successful

development and launch of over 50 proprietary and generic products. He has and continues to serve on several advisory boards and has worked at the state level to foster the funding of innovative research across a broad range of technology-based products. His multi-company R&D and management experience, ranging from drug discovery through commercialization, provides a unique prospective related to the balance between innovation, resource utilization and R&D cycle times in achieving

sustained earnings growth.

Biography

Thomas Chen is President, Abbott Nutrition International. He previously served as vice president, Asia and Latin America, Abbott Nutrition International and as vice president, Pacific, Asia and Africa Operations, Abbott International. He joined Abbott in January 1988 as general manager for Abbott Taiwan for the company's international division. He has held several management positions in Asia for the same division. In 1996, he was promoted to regional director, Greater China. He was appointed to his current role in April of 2006. Before joining Abbott, Chen held several senior management positions at Cyanamid.


Chen serves on the advisory boards of the Abbott Chinese Culture Network (Currently Asian Leadership and Cultural Network) and the Executive Talent and Leadership Development, and on the board of directors for the Clara Abbott Foundation. He also serves on the United Way of Lake County "Success by Six" committee, an initiative to promote early education for children.


He earned a bachelor's degree in international business from National Cheng-Chi University in Taiwan and a master's degree in business administration from Indiana University.

Abstract

The rest of the World believes that China is posing great challenges or even threats in many aspects and will be more so in the years to come. However, when focusing on a particular field, we wonder if it is actually true. For instance, is China challenging the world in biotechnology R&D? If so, in what aspects? What are the statistics and evidence supporting the arguments? Who are the people doing top-notch

research in China and are they leading the actions that pose challenges to the rest of the world? What does China really need to become a biotech giant? I will address these questions in the following three aspects: the people and institutions, the funding and policy, and perspectives for the future.


Biography

Dr. Jun Yu is currently a professor and Associate Director of Beijing Institute for Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has joint appointments and supervises graduate students at the Institute of Computer Sciences of CAS, Zhejiang University, and Chinese Agricultural University. Dr. Yu obtained his B.S. in biochemistry from Jilin University in 1983 and Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from New York University Medical School in 1990. He had served as a Research Assistant Professor at NYU

since 1990 until he joined University of Washington Genome Center in 1993. Dr. Yu’s primary research interests include genome biology and bioinformatics. He has led many major genome projects in China, including the Human Genome Project (the Chinese effort), the Superhybrid Rice Genome Project, the Silkworm Genome Project, and the Chicken Genome Diversity Project, which all resulted in high-impact

publications in major international journals, including Science, Nature, and PLoS Biology. He has published over 100 scientific papers and related books. Dr. Yu has won numerous academic awards, including the Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Achievements (Group, 2003, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Scientific Leader of the Year, 2002 (The first “SA50” Award by the journal Scientific American), “Qiushi” Award for Scientific Achievement (2002, QiuShi Science and Technology

Foundation, Hong Kong), 100-Talent Plan (Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2002-2005), Outstanding Young Investigator Award (Class B, the Chinese Natural Science Foundation, 1999-2002), American Foundation for Urological Diseases Ph.D. Research Scholar (1991-1993), and China-US Biology Examination and Application (CUSBEA,1983).

To make it even more meaningful, this seminar will also focus very heavily on specific and highly practical tips and suggestions (homework!) to really get your career moving forward. There will be detailed explanations as to why the tips and suggestions will help you in your career. Time will be devoted to Q&As. This presentation was presented at the 2005 NAAAP National Convention in Chicago, the 2006 NAAAP National Convention

in Seattle, and at several other workshops in the Chicagoland and Dallas-Ft Worth areas, and received a lot of praise for its practical nature and usefulness. This seminar is targeted for all professional Asians/Asian-Americans, and any non-Asian technical professional working in Corporate America.


Biography

David Lum is the Director of Asia/Pacific Product & Support Operations for the Networks and Enterprise business in Motorola, where he manages product operations and supply chain for the Asia/Pacific region. For the past 24 years, David worked in the land mobile two-way radio business and has extensive experience in a wide variety of markets and applications that use two-way voice and wireless data radio systems. David’s work experience includes product development, systems marketing, manufacturing, systems engineering, field engineering, project and program management, sales and engineering training, and business development. David has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master’s of Science degree in Management from the

Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. David is also an adjunct faculty member at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, teaching project management and international business. David also serves as President of the Asian Business Council in Motorola, an employee-based network, and as a senior advisory council member for the National Association of Asian American Professionals. He started two Toastmasters clubs and served as President for both.

Energy Saving for Minimizing Impact of Climate Change - Dr. Frank Zhu

Abstract

Refining and chemical plants consume large amount of energy required to make the

transformation from raw materials to products. Typically energy cost accounts for 50% of cash operating costs (excluding feedstock costs, capital costs and depreciation) making energy a major cost factor and also an important opportunity for cost reduction. Furthermore, energy saving could reduce flue gas emissions for refining and chemical plants and thus minimize their foot prints in global climate change. This requires much attention from developing countries including China where much industrial activities are taking place. UOP experience indicates that use of optimization techniques could help refining and chemical plants to reduce 20% of energy consumption by use of advanced process technologies and better process designs.


Biography

Frank Zhu is a senior associate at UOP, a technology company for refining and petrochemical industries. He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, a M.S. in Energy Engineering and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. Prior to joining UOP, Dr. Zhu was a Research Professor in the Department of Process Integration at University of Manchester in England. He was an independent consultant providing energy

optimization expertise to refining, petrochemical and chemical companies and the member of national committee for process intensification. He has published numerous articles on novel modeling, heat exchange and energy optimization techniques. During the last five years working at UOP, he has implemented many of his research results into engineering design and operation practice which leads to significant savings in energy and operating costs for industries.
