Abstract

Powerful forces are threatening the future of the pharmaceutical industry. Increasing pressure on health care spending, growing regulatory conservatism, declining productivity, and escalating generic competition are challenging future success. More than ever pharmaceutical research organizations must adopt new strategies to efficiently identify best-in-class products with unquestionable benefit versus risk. We must focus on commercially attractive disease areas of high unmet medical need. We must maximize R&D investment by driving to unprecedented levels of productivity and efficiency. We must achieve a balance of innovative new approaches and meaningful improvements on old ones. Through the execution of new research strategies, we have an opportunity to sustain the success of our industry and deliver ground-breaking new drugs that improve the lives of patients.
